Snow
Sports South Africa's President Peter Pilz, who accompanied
the junior development squad to Austria, is delighted
about the quality and success of the training camp.
Seven years of training at South Africa's ski resort,
Tiffindell in the Eastern Cape, has produced a group
of highly motivated and talented young alpine skiers.
Alpine race trainer
Jimmy Dimitri from Austria, who coached the squad during
the training camp, was impressed by the quick progress
of all squad members and praised their discipline and
commitment. Intensive gate training sessions combined
with video-analysis lifted the athletes to new levels. |

The South African
Junior Development Training Camp provides an opportunity
to bring together South Africa’s most promising young
skiers to train in Austria. One objective is to implement
the Snow Sports SA Transformation Programme. Athletes
have been selected with the long term objective of
eventually progressing through the athletes pathway
to the National Alpine Ski Team. The short term view
is to select individuals from the camp to participate
in the 2010 FIS Junior training programme. These objectives
are basic elements of the “Vision 2014” plan which
is the high performance pathway introducing our youth
to international participation, competing in events
on the FIS calendar. Hopefully, some will progress
to participate in Alpine Junior World Ski Championships,
Youth Olympic Winter Games, World Alpine Ski Championships
and eventually follow in the footsteps of Alex Heath,
and more recently Peter Scott, and have the honour
of representing South Africa at future Olympic Winter
Games.

Nassfeld-Hermagor
in Austria has been selected as the venue for the
2010 Junior Training Camp. The resort has access
to 110 km of perfectly prepared, snow-sure and avalanche-safe
pistes. In addition, with a length of 2.2 km, the
last third of the Carnia run is one of Europe's
longest floodlit pistes. The “Ski Arena Nassfeld”
is situated in the midst of the so-called “Karnische
Region” where the boarders of the three countries
Austria, Italy and Slovenia meet. The large Millenium-Express
lift facility carries 3600 winter athletes per hour
up to the skiing areas in Nassfeld-Hermagor.

Skiing
is our schools winter sport and I have been part of
the Ikhephu Ski Pups since Grade 1. This is a talent
that I have that I would like to develop and the sport
not only provides opportunity for me to represent my
country but sport is also one of the events through
which all nations can promote friendship.

It
started at school where most of my friends were skiing,
so I decided to join them. I was selected to travel
to Korea in 2007. Now I try to ski as much as I can,
when I get the chance. I think I have a passion for
skiing. I love skiing because I love to be on snow and
I also love the speed of the skis.

I
started skiing when I was in primary school in Rhodes.
The principal, Mr. Piet Steyn, used to take me to Tiffindell
once a week. In 2006 I went to Korea to ski in the Olympic
Dream Programme. I am sponsored by Rugby Legends to
attend Barkly East High School. I love skiing and dream
of going overseas.

I
started skiing in 2006 on a carpet slope in Johannesburg.
We then visited Tiffindell where I skied on snow for
the first time. I enjoy the speed and freedom that skiing
gives me. I went to Korea as part of the 2009 Dream
Programme. My aim is to represent South Africa in the
2014 and 2018 Winter Olympics. I also play hockey and
enjoy all water sports. Thank you for this opportunity.

I
have been skiing for seven years. I had my first lesson
at Tiffindell Ski Resort. I got involved with the ski
school at my school. Later I went to Tiffindell once
a week. That is how I met Alex Heath who taught me a
lot about skiing. I also play cricket and tennis.

I
got involved in skiing through the ski school. I have
been skiing since 2003, we went up to Tiffindell three
times and had 3 beginner lessons. From there I started
practicing harder but I missed out for one year because
of a broken leg. I broke my leg in a rugby match in
2006 and did not play rugby ever again. I play other
sports like tennis, cricket and athletics.

I
ski because my mom used to run the ski
school and Gerri, an instructor at Tiffindell, taught
me to love skiing. I love the opportunity to be on snow.
All of my family ski and I love to ski with them. I
also love racing with my friends.
