International Alpine Skiing

Sive Speelman, born 13/04/1995. When Sive was 9 years old he learned to ski at Tiffindell Ski Resort, which is situated near his hometown, Barkly East (Eastern Cape), and got involved in ski racing under the guidance of 3 times Olympian skier, Alex Heath.
He is a member of the SA Active Ski Club and has come through our local Development Programmes and FIS’s “Bring Children to the Snow” programme organized by Dr. Christina Olivier who is the National Development Officer.

Sive was one of three athletes from South Africa who attended the “Dream Program” in 2007. The programme was organized by PyeongChang in Korea, the host of the 2018 Olympic Winter Games.
He has taken part in two junior training camps held in Nassfeld (Austria) in 2010 and 2011, organised by Snow Sports SA.
Sive attended the 2010, 2011 and 2012 FIS Training Camps, organised by the International Ski Federation which are held over a 90 day period and are for young, talented athletes.
Sive qualified and participated successfully at the 1st Youth Olympic Winter Games, held in Innsbruck (Austria) in January 2012, where he represented South Africa in the Slalom, Giant Slalom, Super-G and Super Combined events. Sive was also identified as a potential participant for Sochi 2014 and in November 2012 was awarded an IOC Solidarity grant through SASCOC. This made it possible for him to qualify for the 2014 Olympic Winter Games. Unfortunately SASCOC decided not to send him.
We are proud to have an athlete like Sive Speelman, who came through the ranks of our local development programmes and has shown much talent and dedication. His achievement has inspired many South African youngsters to get involved in skiing.
He represented South Africa in three FIS Alpine World Ski Championships: 2011 in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (Germany), 2013, in Schladming (Austria) and 2017 in St. Moritz (Switzerland) where he finished 54th in the Slalom.

Elisabeth Olivier, born 19/03/1999. Elisabeth lives in Barkly East (Eastern Cape) and was selected by SASCOC to represent South Africa at the 2016 Youth Olympic Winter Games in Lillehammer (Norway). She is the current South African National Alpine Slalom Champion and competed at the 2017 St. Moritz FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, finishing in 61st place in the Slalom and in 76th place in the Giant Slalom event. Elisabeth is presently studying at the University of Pretoria. Unfortunately, she did not qualify for PyeongChang 2018.

Connor Wilson, born 18/12/1996. He is the current South African National Alpine Slalom Champion and has competed in over 100 international FIS races since 2012. Connor competed at the 2017 St. Moritz FIS Alpine World Ski Championships, achieving 54th place in the Giant Slalom. Connor is presently studying at the University of Vermont (USA) where he joined the Mount Mansfield Ski Club.

Both, Connor and Sive, have qualified for the upcoming 2018 Olympic Winter Olympic Games in PyeongChang (Korea) and are hoping to get selected by SASCOC to represent South Africa.

Our participation in PyeongChang is crucial as it would give us an opprtunity to create role models equipped to assist in our efforts to promote and develop snow sports and Olympic ideals and values in South Africa more effectively.
